Georgia is home to nearly 11,000 providers of logistics services, from core transportation and facilities to third-party logistics and software providers. It ranks as the 5th largest overall logistics employer in the nation. Savannah itself is home to 15 large warehouse complexes more than 14 million square feet of warehousing and generating more than 500,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually. The Port of Savannah, a world class and strategically located deep-water port, receives thousands of ships and handles millions of tons of cargo each year; and an extensive public bus transportation system and a network of major roads, including Interstates 95 and 16 that pass within a few miles of the city, transport millions of passengers each year.

The State of Georgia ranks 13th nationally in the value of export shipments, the Port of Savannah is the 4th largest container port in the US, and the City of Savannah and its suburbs are home to numerous third-party logistics, transportation, freight-forwarding, distribution, and warehousing centers. Companies including Delta Air Lines, United Parcel Service, SAIA, and Manhattan Associates are headquartered in Georgia along with major players in logistics such as the Home Depot, Coco-Cola and Gulfstream. Four of the top 10 warehouse providers in North America are headquartered in Georgia, and 90 percent of the top 25 global third-party logistics providers (3PLs) have operations in Georgia.

The deepening of both the Panama Canal and the Port of Savannah, and the planned construction of a new transoceanic canal through Nicaragua, will bring more and larger container ships into the Port of Savannah during the next few decades, resulting in increased business for Savannah and the entire US east coast. The transportation, logistics, and warehouse business sectors will be directly influenced by this increase, creating new jobs in these sectors in and around Savannah and coastal Georgia. Job growth in the Savannah Region is expected to be robust in several areas including logistics, freight, transportation operations, and supply chain management.
